Chapter 18
Fortunately, Sam didnât need much convincing. After making sure I really wasnât injured, we went back the way we had come. There was no way to tell if Gerard had another posse hiding in wait on the ground floor or something, and neither of us wanted to risk it. Ten minutes later, we were back in Samâs car.
âAll right, youâve made me wait long enough,â Sam said. âWhat happened back there?â
I bit my lip, trying to think of how much I should tell Sam. All of it, I decided. At least, all that was relevant. âGerard gave a demonstration of Vibes to a⦠group of my cousins.â
âA group? Those four that were with him, they are like you?â
I waggled a hand. âYes, and no. They had heritage that led back to Mahlat, but not for many generations. Most of them had less than a percentage of her bloodline. They were⦠weak.â That wasnât true, but Sam didnât need to know details. âOnce Gerard left, I made sure my cousins wouldnât help Gerard again.â
âYou looked pretty shaken back there. Was that because of the demonstration?â
âItâs really bad, Sam.â I swallowed, remembering how that girl had given in to her lust. âWe canât let Gerard spread it.â
âThatâs why weâre here. Weâll stop him. Where is Gerard taking the Vibes?â
âTo a train yard, where there is a distribution hub. There canât be that many in LA.â
Sam grimaced. âYouâre wrong, unfortunately. There are at least six major train yards that I can think of in downtown Los Angeles alone, and more as you go south-east toward Buena Park and south to Long Beach.â
âOh.â I got my phone out. I had several missed calls, but they would have to wait. I checked, just to see what Sam was talking about. He wasnât kidding.
Itâs hard to comprehend sometimes just how large the greater Los Angeles area is. Itâs forty miles, roughly, from Irvine to Santa Clarita, and almost every square foot of that space is dense city. There is an absurd amount of goods coming in and going out every day. A lot of that traffic is in the form of cargo trucks, and more comes in from the docks, but there were constant trains coming and going from the city as well.
âThereâs got to be a way to narrow it down,â I said. âSome of these stations are commuter train parking.â
âYouâre right.â Sam got his phone out. âIâll call it in. Lara will put some people on the problem.â
While Sam was busy with that, I checked my messages. The first was from Jason.
âHey, Alex, I guess youâre busy. I would really like it if you could make the time to meet my parents. Theyâre only in town until Thursday and I donât know when youâll get another chance to meet them. Give me a call so we can talk about it.â
Jason had left me another message.
âAlex! Hey. I may have promised my parents we would go to dinner with them tonight. Ah⦠Anyway. Call me.
